Sarah Giardenelli, ND, MSOM, LAc

Founder & Naturopathic Doctor & Licensed Acupuncturist

Dear Future Patient,

Thank you for visiting! With over 13 years of clinical experience, I am honored to serve patients at my own private practice, Collective Health Center. By integrating both Naturopathic and classical East Asian Medicine and acupuncture, I strive for excellence in providing the best care possible to each patient. Acting as a partner on the path to optimal health while honoring the basic principles of natural medicine. I take time to listen to the whole story, answer questions and educate. I strive to uncover the underlying causes of imbalance and offer a safe and effective individualized wellness plan. As a medically-trained naturopathic doctor I speak the language of both conventional, integrative, and holistic medicine, and after many years of working in a primary care setting, enjoy building bridges with my patient's medical team.

I know that I am on track when I hear patients say: “Thank you for helping me, because my health is improving, my relationship is improving, my family dynamic is improving, and I can engage in my life”. To me, this is what it is all about and the journey I am honored to be a part of with my patients.

My focus with patients is truly on personalized health. My goal, one patient at a time, is our community or collective health. I welcome the opportunity to be a partner with you on your journey!

In Good Health,

Dr. Sarah

OUR APPROACH

General FAQs

Naturopathic Medicine FAQs

What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 24 hour cancellation policy. You must give notice 24-hours prior to your appointment that you would like to cancel or reschedule. You can reach us through the patient portal or by voicemail or email. Should 24-hours notice not be provided to cancel or reschedule a follow up visit, we charge a $75 insufficient notice fee. Should you need to reschedule your initial appointment and you are unable to provide a 24 hour notice then you will lose your $100 deposit and will need to make a new deposit if you would like to book again in the future.

Do you accept insurance?

No. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to network with or take insurance payments for our naturopathic services in Virginia, as the medical model does not yet recognize the importance of holism and prevention; steps are being taken in Virginia and nationally to change this. While we are out of network for our acupuncture services, we can provide itemized receipts for you to self-submit should you have out-of-network coverage for acupuncture. Fortunately, if you have a flexible spending account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), you may be able to use it for naturopathic and/or acupuncture services. For more information, please reference our transparent fee schedule.

Because we are not an insurance model clinic, we can provide longer, unrushed, and personized visits for our patients. And since we see one patient at a time, rather than rotating through rooms, we are present with our patients throughout the duration of our acupuncture sessions.

Can you be my primary care provider?

Not in Virginia. The scope of practice for Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) varies throughout the country. However, there are several states that do not yet offer Naturopathic Doctors a practice license; such is the case in Virginia. This limits NDs from practicing in a primary care role. Therefore, NDs in Virginia are unable to offer physical exams, diagnostic imaging, or manage pharmaceuticals.

As a result, NDs in Virginia practice in a consulting role, co-managing patients with their primary care providers. This allows the ND to help patients uncover underlying causes of imbalance(s) and offer safe and effective individualized, natural treatments including clinical nutrition, homeopathy, botanical medicine, acupuncture, and lifestyle counseling. If you are looking for a provider to help optimize the conventional care you are receiving and to put the pieces together holistically, our practice is likely a good match.

Why are your acupuncture and naturopathic services separate?

Since some patients are only interested in naturopathic care and others only in acupuncture, acupuncture treatments are kept as a separate service. Additionally, while some patients have insurance coverage for acupuncture in Virginia, there is not yet insurance coverage for naturopathic care. Therefore, at Collective Health Center, we keep naturopathic visits and acupuncture visits separate to appropriately accommodate everyone.

What are your success rates?

Since our approach is individualized, success is necessarily driven by each patient’s outcomes, which can vary based upon many factors. There are a number of research studies that have demonstrated the efficacy of the naturopathic, whole health and whole person approach [see ‘Research Highlights’ on page 22] for conditions such as cardiovascular disease, chronic pain conditions, type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, depression, anxiety, and a myriad of complex chronic conditions.

Acupuncture FAQ

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, when done with a licensed acupuncturist, treatments are exceptionally safe, with a low risk of serious adverse events.

Is acupuncture painful?

Despite the cartoons and intense portrayals that you might see in the media or on television, acupuncture is well tolerated by most patients. Acupuncture is performed with ultrafine, sterile, stainless-steel and is different than the needles used for blood draws and tattoos. Patients typically sleep or get into a state of deep relaxation during a treatment. In our experience, acupuncture is not well tolerated by those who are severely averse to needles or who faint while getting blood drawn and we do not recommend acupuncture for these individuals.

What conditions do acupuncturists see?

Acupuncture is best known for treating musculoskeletal pain conditions, however, over the past 60 years, high level clinical research points towards acupunctures benefits in many conditions beyond musculoskeletal pain, affirming what we have known for centuries. There is strong evidence of benefits for: allergic rhinitis, knee osteoarthritis, sciatica, migraine prevention, chronic low back pain, postoperative nausea and vomiting, headaches (tension type and chronic), chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (with antiemetics), postoperative pain. There is also evidence of potential positive effect for several other conditions including: acute low back, sciatica, anxiety, neck pain, lateral elbow pain, temporomandibular pain, obesity, perimenopausal and postmenopausal insomnia, hypertension (with medication), insomnia, menopausal hot flushes, aromatase-inhibitor induced joint pains, plantar heel pain, asthma in adults, stroke rehabilitation, post-stroke insomnia, back or pelvic pain during pregnancy, post-stroke shoulder pain and spasticity, cancer related pain and fatigue, depression (with antidepressants), restless leg syndrome and dry eye.

Is there anything on the needles?

No. The acupuncture needles used are single use, sterile, ultrafine, and stainless-steel; nothing is applied to the needle prior to application.

How does acupuncture work?

Unlike many conventional drugs and treatments, acupuncture has numerous ways in which it works. Acupuncture improves the flow of blood, which carries oxygen and essential nutrients through the blood vessel system to nourish the cells in our body and promote healing. Acupuncture also stimulates the nervous system by activating sensory nerves that send the signal to the brain which then releases natural pain killers to shut off the pain signal, reduce inflammation, and eliminate the pain. Acupuncture can also help to stimulate the release of endorphins and encephalins, our feel-good hormones and helps to balance hormone levels in the body. However, likely the most central way in which it works is through stimulating and regulation of the purinergic signaling to all tissues and organ systems of the body. Acupuncture needles, through their twisting of the connective tissue, stimulate purinergic signals in the extracellular matrix which connects our entire system together; everything in our body is truly connected. Early Chinese physicians saw illness as imbalance in the energetic systems in the body and developed acupuncture to rebalance the body through the 12 main meridians, which are the pathways that the vital energy or Qi flows through in the body. Essentially, acupuncture helps to stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
