Veterans Care

I am extremely honored and proud to announce that I am participating in the Veteran’s Community Care Program (VACCP)! This is a program that allows eligible Veterans to receive acupuncture treatments that are 100% covered through the Veteran’s Administration. Acupuncture is an amazing practice that can help veterans with everything from pain management, trauma and mental health issues, to general health and wellness.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility to receive care through the Veterans Community Care Program (VACCP) is based on one or more of the following conditions:

1) Veterans must be either enrolled in VA health care or be eligible for VA care without needing to be enrolled.
2) Local acupuncture treatment is in the Veteran's best medical interest

3) The veteran's local VA facility does not provide acupuncture services
4) Veteran lives more than 40 miles from the nearest full-service VA medical facility
5) VA cannot make an appointment for you at the nearest VA medical facility within 20-28 days based on the care you need

Once eligibility is confirmed, please following these 3 easy steps for scheduling your initial acupuncture appointment through the Veterans Administration Community Care Program (VACCP):

1. Schedule an appointment with your Veterans Administration primary care provider and tell them you would like acupuncture for your conditions and provide them with my name and contact information: Dr. Sarah Giardenelli, ND, MSOM, LAc, NPI 1316253396.

2. The VA will then contact my office with your referral number and number of treatments covered for your care.

3. Once the above steps are completed and you are provided your referral number, you can either wait for the VA to help with scheduling your initial visit or you may schedule directly HERE. If you choose to schedule yourself, please note "VACCP" along with your referral number in the "Reasons for Appointment".

Referral Information for Veteran Administration Primary Care Providers or Specialists:

If you are a Veteran Administration primary care provider or specialist looking to refer your eligible veteran patient for acupuncture in the community through the Veterans Community Care Program (VACCP), please follow these steps to place the referral in the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) electronic medical record system:

1. Click 'Action'
2. Click 'New'
3. Select 'Consult'
4. Select 'Encounter Provider'
5. Select 'New Visit'
6. Select 'Comm Care Acupuncture'

The majority of the patient information auto-populates. Additional information, such as diagnosis and number of visits and acupuncturist name [Sarah Giardenelli, ND, MSOM, LAc, NPI 1316253396] need to be selected or added.

Accessibility for Veterans who do not currently have a Veterans Administration Primary Care Provider:

Eligibility for acupuncture through the community care program requires a referral from a Veterans Administration (VA) primary care provider. Many of our participating veterans have a local non-VA primary care provider they continue to work with, however, they also establish with a VA primary care provider in order to access community care benefits.  There are a few extra steps for such eligible veterans who do not have a current VA primary care provider, but doing so provides accessibility to many benefits, including acupuncture services through the community care program at no out of pocket cost.

If you to not currently have a VA primary care provider, but are eligible and would like acupuncture services with us through the community care program, please contact either the Martinsburg Veterans Medical Center at 304.263.0811 (ext 4) OR the DC Veterans Medical Center at 202.745.8000 (ext 4) to check your eligibility and get assistance scheduling with a VA primary care provider for the referral (see 3 Easy Steps above). The VA now has teleHealth visits, which can make accessing a visit with the VA primary care provider easier.
